Biography of Phil Wood
Phil Wood is the Culinary Director at Pt Leo Estate on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Phil’s food philosophy is centred around balanced, deliberate food that highlights the flavours naturally present in the produce. He is passionate about working with farmers and providers to create food that uses the very best locally sourced ingredients.
Born in New Zealand, Phil won the Josephine Pignolet Award for best young chef at the 2007 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide awards while he was junior sous chef at Tetsuya's Restaurant. This gave him the opportunity to take on the role of chef de partie at Thomas Keller's The French Laundry in the Napa Valley in 2007.
Wood returned to Sydney and joined Rockpool est. 1989 as Head Chef in March 2009 before his appointment as Executive Chef in 2010. From 2012, he was awarded three chef’s hats by the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide. Rockpool est. 1989 was also awarded three stars by Australian Gourmet Traveller and in 2016, it was named the magazine’s Restaurant of the Year.
